The following article appertaining to Orthorexia nervosa published by well regarded UK newspaper — The Guardian — although sounding like a joke, was NOT published on April 1st and it is in fact far from being funny…

To be fair, let it be acknowledged that perhaps it will suit some people to be given a ‘label’ in a society where we are increasingly encouraged to ‘see ourselves’ as the ‘sum of our health problems’ — and ‘measure our progress in life’  by the number and type of medications we are taking by the time we shuffle off this mortal coil…

Perhaps a few folk will feel ‘happier’ knowing that they have this officially recognized ‘affliction’, that some supposed ‘mental health professionals’ are identifying as an increasing problem in today’s increasingly ‘normality-centric’ society (a spurious concept in itself). We are truly ensnared within a social environment, where the sooner a new label and another potential ‘layer of control’ can be applied to each and every human soul, the better it will suit ‘certain factions’…

Healthy food obsession sparks rise in new eating disorder

Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder.

Eating disorder charities are reporting a rise in the number of people suffering from a serious psychological condition characterised by an obsession with healthy eating.

The condition, orthorexia nervosa, affects equal numbers of men and women, but sufferers tend to be aged over 30, middle-class and well-educated.

The condition was named by a Californian doctor, Steven Bratman, in 1997, and is described as a “fixation on righteous eating”. Until a few years ago, there were so few sufferers that doctors usually included them under the catch-all label of “Ednos” – eating disorders not otherwise recognised. Now, experts say, orthorexics take up such a significant proportion of the Ednos group that they should be treated separately.

“I am definitely seeing significantly more orthorexics than just a few years ago,” said Ursula Philpot, chair of the British Dietetic Association’s mental health group. “Other eating disorders focus on quantity of food but orthorexics can be overweight or look normal. They are solely concerned with the quality of the food they put in their bodies, refining and restricting their diets according to their personal understanding of which foods are truly ‘pure’.”

Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out.

The obsession about which foods are “good” and which are “bad” means orthorexics can end up malnourished. Their dietary restrictions commonly cause sufferers to feel proud of their “virtuous” behaviour even if it means that eating becomes so stressful their personal relationships can come under pressure and they become socially isolated.

“The issues underlying orthorexia are often the same as anorexia and the two conditions can overlap but orthorexia is very definitely a distinct disorder,” said Philpot. “Those most susceptible are middle-class, well-educated people who read about food scares in the papers, research them on the internet, and have the time and money to source what they believe to be purer alternatives.”

Deanne Jade, founder of the National Centre for Eating Disorders, said: “There is a fine line between people who think they are taking care of themselves by manipulating their diet and those who have orthorexia. I see people around me who have no idea they have this disorder. I see it in my practice and I see it among my friends and colleagues.”

Jade believes the condition is on the increase because “modern society has lost its way with food”. She said: “It’s everywhere, from the people who think it’s normal if their friends stop eating entire food groups, to the trainers in the gym who [promote] certain foods to enhance performance, to the proliferation of nutritionists, dieticians and naturopaths [who believe in curing problems through entirely natural methods such as sunlight and massage].

“And just look in the bookshops – all the diets that advise eating according to your blood type or metabolic rate. This is all grist for the mill to those looking for proof to confirm or encourage their anxieties around food.”


You shouldn’t need us to tell you this — but don’t be taken in by this psycho-babble claptrap… There is NO issue for ANY person that is concerned about eating healthily and trying to avoid the worst of the many travesties enacted upon today’s food chain and purveyed to consumers as ‘wholesome food’…

The REAL issue is the lack of ‘real food’ and moreover ‘guaranteed safe’ food accessible by the intelligent, informed consumer.

No matter how many medical-representatives of the system, or politicians try to infer that ‘we’ are ‘going mad’ and ‘need help’ — and that ‘all the food we get in our local supermarket is fit, safe and healthy to consume’ — WE KNOW this is utter b*ll*cks!

If you are lucky enough to have avoided being so-dumbed down by toxic chemicals in your water, or neuro-toxins (and worse) in your vaccinations, or otherwise poisoned and sedated (or both) by long-term medications for almost any ‘typical disease’ of ‘modern society’… and YOU HAVE THE INTELLECT TO RECOGNIZE that things like:

  • GMO are inherently wrong, as well as unnecessary… and that
  • Convenience and fast foods are the ‘dregs’ of commodities dressed up with ‘unnatural’ chemistry, fancy packaging and multi-million dollar marketing drives, to bamboozle us into accepting ‘synthetic-chemical-laden, health-impuning, mind-altering, long-term well-being undermining
  • That the adulteration of our drinking water (and now our oceans!!) may well have sinister, ulterior implications
  • That vested interests and profiteering are consistently being proven to have been put before common, human welfare!

Do NOT accept the insinuation that Normal Common Sense and concern for you and your family’s wellbeing is ‘A Mental Illness’.

If people have anxieties about food… it is for very good, and real reason..

And if  ‘psycho-babbling’ therapists, scientists, counsellors, psychiatrist, politicians or any others spew out such toxic crap that suggests that THEY DO NOT realize what has happened, and continues to happen, to the quality of our food supplies  — it is THEY that need treatment — if not locking up!

Orthorexics — stand firm and don’t be misled into suspecting that your suspicion of the food that you may typically be forced to buy is very largely BAD for you…

But also consider that there are ways that you CAN access real food…

If you too ARE NOT MAD, MENTALLY ILL, EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED… But are simply, and justifiably, anxious about the rubbish that passes for manufactured food that we are all apparently supposed to ‘swallow’ without dissent — and you want real food then let us know!
